ABOUT US

Print Mail Share

As commerce continues to become ever more international, the business community is increasingly turning to arbitration as an efficient alternative to traditional litigation. The not-for-profit association Paris, the Home of International Arbitration was created by different actors in the arbitration community in March 2009 with a sole objective: the promotion of Paris as the world's leading site for international arbitration. Paris, the Home of International Arbitration is comprised of leading arbitration practitioners, arbitrators, and others actively involved in the world of arbitration - academics, interpreters…

The association has one driving principle guiding the action of all of our members, the promotion of arbitration in Paris in line with our core values:

EXPERTISE

Paris, the Home of International Arbitration was founded by arbitration specialists.
Recognized experts in their fields, each of our members contributes years of experience and know-how.

MULTICULTURALISM

The association's membership reflects the cultural diversity of the multitude of nationalities gathered together in the Paris's significant and welcoming arbitration community. A spirit of being open to the world is deeply ingrained in our community and in our association.

ENGAGEMENT

More than just members, the people who make up the association are specialists who are up to date on the most recent developments in arbitration. They have a common desire to share their knowledge and to help inform others as to why Paris is the leading centre for international arbitration.

NEUTRALITY

Paris, the Home of International Arbitration is not an arbitration institute and does not make any appointments. It does not itself serve as an institution hosting or administering arbitral proceedings. Moreover, our association is not intended as a marketing tool for Parisian lawyers and law firms, but rather only to provide a resource for parties interested in selecting a seat for their arbitration or needing assistance in organizing a hearing in Paris.

Members of our association participate in conferences and organize events in France and elsewhere in order to spread the word about the French understanding of and approach to international arbitration and to inform people of the advantages Paris has to offer as a seat for arbitrations.

Our non-profit partners are institutions that are particularly implicated in French law and in international dispute resolution. Each of them adds, through their efforts, to the success of Paris as the leading venue for international arbitration. We thank them for their support for the work of our association.

Comité Français de l’Arbitrage
The Comité Français de l’Arbitrage (CFA), a not for profit association, was established in 1955 to study and promote arbitration. It has taken a lead role in the reform of French arbitration law, organizes colloquia and, since 1955, has published the Revue de l’arbitrage, a scholarly journal devoted to international, domestic and comparative arbitration law from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

Centre de Médiation et d’Arbitrage de Paris
The Centre de Médiation et d’Arbitrage de Paris (CMAP) is a not for profit association created in 1995 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris (CCIP), in conjunction with major financial and legal institutions. CMAP's goal is to encourage recourse to mediation and arbitration, taking into account the needs of all industrial and commercial enterprises to resolve their disputes quickly and confidentially. CMAP maintains a list of experienced arbitrators selected by an independent Commission and ensures for businesses a secure procedure regulated by the CMAP's Rules of Arbitration.

Association Française d’Arbitrage
The Association Française d’Arbitrage (AFA), a not for profit association, is a commercial and generalist arbitration institution established in 1975 at the joint initiative of legal and business circles. The AFA promotes the use of arbitration in France and internationally to resolve disputes. It supervises arbitrations subject to its rules, which exist in French and English and were revised most recently in 2010. AFA arbitration is confidential, cost-effective and prompt, and it also benefits from the wide experience of AFA members and supervision of compliance with the AFA Rules by the AFA’s Arbitration Committee. As mediation is an important element of the dispute resolution process, the AFA has reached an agreement with the Institut d’Expertise, d’Arbitrage et de Médiation (IEAM) under which the AFA recommends the IEAM rules of mediation and the IEAM refers arbitration matters to the AFA, thus ensuring that parties have effective choices for the resolution of their disputes.

French National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce
The French National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC France) is one of 90 national committees bringing together businesses that are members of the ICC, communicating their concerns and expressing the opinions of the international business community to public authorities. Founded in 1919, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is the sole global organization to represent businesses in all sectors in over 130 countries. Among the most active national committees, ICC France has always taken a leadership role in moving forward the ICC's goals of encouraging free trade and international investment and helping businesses meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of globalization. Paris Bar
The Paris Bar has long supported the activities of the arbitration community and Paris's role as a seat of arbitration. Since 2005, the Paris Bar's Working Commission on International Arbitration has established itself as a genuine forum for discussion on the topic. The Commission routinely invites the Paris Bar to take positions on questions likely to assist the arbitration community. A decision of the Paris Bar Council has thus confirmed that the preparation of witnesses within the context of international arbitration does not violate ethical rules applicable to French attorneys. Furthermore, the Paris Bar now holds the position of observer to UNCITRAL's Working Group II on arbitration and conciliation.
